In 1989 Stephen received an ACLU Civil Libertarian of the Year Award, an N.A.A.C.P. Volunteer Award in 1982, the Floyd Skinner Justice Giant’s Award in 1988, and a Champions of Justice Award. He is listed in several Who’s Who’s including:
Stephen is a Fellow of the American Bar Association’s College of Labor and Employment Lawyers, a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, and a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He has been listed in "The Best Lawyers of America" for 2007, and was first awarded the distinction of "Super Lawyer" in 2006. Stephen has served on the Judicial Selection Committee for the United States Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit and for the Grand Rapids Bar Association. He is a faculty member of the Hillman Advocacy clinic and an Advisory Board member for the Institute of Continuing Education Employment Law Section. Stephen has also served as President of the Floyd Skinner Bar Association and as President of the Grand Rapids Bar Association. Other memberships include:
