The growth in 2002 was only the very beginning of what would be a complete metamorphosis over the next four years. It quickly became apparent that larger office space was going to be needed as well as yet another lawyer. Another attorney was added in September and in November, the firm moved into its own suite which was considerably larger on Wacker Dr.
The following cases came to verdict, judgment, or settlement in the year 2003. Please note that cases can take anywhere from a few months to several years to reach their conclusions.
United States District Court (N.D. Ill)
02 C 5605
(Sexual Harassment Title VII)
Our client was a 16 year old girl working her first job as a receptionist in a pizzeria. While there she was subjected to a myriad of sexual harassment from her co-workers and managers including but not limited to: graphic descriptions of oral sex, constant physical touchings, at least one male co-worker exposing his penis, the presence on her worktable of her managers collection of Playboy Magazines, and an offer from one of her co-workers to have sex with him for $5,000 (an offer her manager told her she should accept). On the eve of trial we settled the case to her satisfaction.
United States District Court (N.D. Ill)
02 C 1666
(Disability ADA)
In this unusual disability discrimination case, our client was the victim of a murder-suicide during the pendency of her case and we went forward with her case representing her estate. Our client had been a school teacher who had a heart condition and needed certain accommodations to reduce the stress in her environment. The school refused. We settled the case to the satisfaction of the administrator of her estate after she passed.
United States District Court (N.D. Ill)
02 C 7939
(Ethnic Discrimination Title VII)
Our client who was Hispanic, worked for a utilities company and was terminated for having done side jobs, in spite of the fact that non-Hispanic employees (including a supervisor) had also done many of these side jobs and had never been disciplined. We settled the case to his satisfaction.
In addition to thee cases, many cases were settled while still at the EEOC or IDHR. Settlements for 2003 totaled approximately $1 Million.
